ReplyDeleteI wonder if the advertiser is thinking of Sean ASTIN. Hee. Anyway, the dog is adorable. I bet it was just used for the actual "find the pups in the snow" scene, snuggled against the poor deceased mother. Because if you look closely it's obvious it's a dog not a wolf.

ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure, the pups I saw at the shoot were Inuits's unless they used a mix of dogs for different scenes?
ReplyDeletesales: Some have speculated that these may have been the pups used for the "direwolves in the snow" scene, as they seem pretty young.

But one husky is all I can handle at the moment.....
yeah, they had to be used as the newborn direwolves in the snow. the one in the picture only looks about 2 months old, so that would put them at about the right age for when they were filming. I'm sure they then used older puppies in other scenes.

ReplyDeleteThe pup is cute and all, but thats not a very remarkable example of the breed, pretty scrawny, much too long in the snout. I wonder though, the colouring on him isn't really right for any of the pups, newborn or not. Maybe his litter-mates had more of the limelight...

I'm a bit surprised they went with huskies. A malamute pup is a bit more rustic in appearance, more wolflike. I'd go with either that or a dog-wolf mix. They are not that uncommon. I knew a husky-wolf mix once. She could have passed for a young direwolf, easy. She was well trained, the only problem was her hunting instinct (it cost the owner many a neighbours' chicken).

ReplyDeleteOH MY WORD! That is one cute Malamute. They are BEASTS when they are full grown though. A girlfriend of mine has one, and he's as big as my Yaris, I swear.

ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of these Northern breeds. The 'Ghost' one looks like a red-and-white coat variety. I've often seen this with huskies but not with malamutes.
I've been reading up on wolf mixes (hybrids) though and I've changed my mind: I don't think they'd make very good movie stars and I think they'd hate being on set with all those people. Training issues, too.
As far as CGI direwolves are concerned, I'd prefer to see real animals in most of the shots. Fingers crossed for malamutes or malamute mixes for growing or maybe even adult direwolves. :)
@-1- The yaris comparison was made whilst he was trying to get IN my car upon my leaving her place one day. I believe his name is Bear.
ReplyDeleteAs for CGI, I have a hard time imagining them finding dogs or even wolves big enough to be exactly like the books, but CGI would look ridiculous. I mean, look at those Twilight wolves. I knew they'd look fake, and yet it was still like, ick, nice computer fleabag.
I'd be willing to sacrifice some size and book specific looks just to keep them real. Though of course, at times, like attack scenes, they'd have to be CGI.
I thought the ones in New Moon looked pretty decent.
ReplyDelete@Sven20...for a film with a huge budget I thought the wolves looked horrible...HBO prides itself on producing quality shows, I just hope that holds true for the CGI...it will ruin the whole show if it looks like cheese ....they better hire Weta !
