Production status report: 2010 edition

I did a few of these posts last year during the downtime. Basically I just speculate on what the status of the production is: what they are working on currently and what their future schedule may look like. It seems like a good time to revisit the idea. So let's start speculating.

With the new year upon us I figure post-production on the pilot is getting back in full swing. After taking a much deserved break during the holidays, Benioff and Weiss are likely working with pilot editor Tatiana Riegel and figuring out what shots to use and where to place them. I suspect this process will take a few weeks.

Come February, we know Modern VideoFilm will be doing some work on the pilot. It is unclear what exactly they will be doing but their website indicates they provide post-production services such as editing, color correction and visual effects. Since Riegel was already brought on as editor I expect that MVF will be used to apply the visual effects. Whether they will be doing completed VFX shots or just rough and unfinished applications so HBO can get an idea of what it might look like, I don't know. I suspect HBO will want to see a pilot that is as complete as possible. Since VFX are going to be so important to the overall series, I'm sure the execs at HBO will want to be sure that they are going to look good before going forward.

Also, despite having to be involved with post-production on some level, Benioff and Weiss will most likely be writing the scripts for the remainder of the first season as well. HBO generally requires these to be submitted for review with any pilot they are considering. Just so they can get a sense of how the rest of the season would play out when evaluating whether to give the green light or not. So David & Dan have a busy couple months ahead of them.

Once editing, visual effects and the scripts are complete, everything will be submitted to HBO. I imagine this will occur in late Feb/early Mar. At that point, we wait for HBO to make their decision. Hopefully it is a quick and easy one for them and an exciting one for us.

  1. I thought they had the scripts for season one (at least in a rough state) already figured out by now?!? Since GRRM is supposed to write the final draft of one of them, and other writers will handle the rest, wouldn't anything more than that be a wast of time?

By the way: happy new year to all of you!

    P.S.: First? Can't be real... ;-)

  3. Has there been any speculation about a jump in HBO subscriptions if they do end up picking up the series? I know that I, for one, am considering subscribing for the first time specifically to watch A Game of Thrones.

Are there any stats about jumps in subscriptions due to the popularity of other HBO shows (ie, Sopranos, Rome)?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Not sure, but I would recommend that word be spread that anyone who does subscribe to HBO because of GoT make sure to write to HBO or in some way let them know that that is the reason they are doing so

I don't know about other shows but i know that True Blood occasioned a massive bump in HBO subscriptions, though i think it occurred after it started airing.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yea I think the True Blood bump was after the first season.

  7. Can anyone enlighten me as to what it costs to subscribe to HBO? (I don't live in the US, so was just curious what kind of investment people will need to make "specifically" to see GoT)...

    ReplyDelete
  8. It depends on your provider but it's about $14.00 US dollars a month.

  10. I'm so glad there is an HBO Canada now, and it's included with the movie channel package I was already getting, and ALSO includes Showtime programming. Two-fer!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Thats a pretty sweet deal spacechampion. Do you get Starz too?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Nope, no Starz channel, but The Movie Network which is the main channel in the package that includes HBO Canada, will be showing the new Spartacus series. We usally get every bit of American programming one way or another.

  14. Passing reference to GoT pilot in the Daily Mail newspaper (UK).

"In the late 1990s to early 2000s, Scott's Porage Oats ran a successful UK advertising campaign on cinema and television featuring actor Rory McCann in a kilt kilt

Knee-length, skirtlike garment worn by men as part of the traditional national garb, or Highland dress, of Scotland. It is made of permanently pleated wool and wrapped around the wearer's waist so that the pleats are in the back and the flat ends overlap in front. .

The former lumberjack made many public appearances to promote the brand and is widely seen as the 'face' of Scott's Porage Oats.

The 6ft 7in Glasgow actor will next be seen in the pilot of U.S. channel HBO's A Game of Thrones, a medieval fantasy television series based on American science fiction writer George RR Martin's book A Song of Ice and Fire."

    Other story:

"Post-True Blood, the premium cable networks suddenly have a thirst for geek-friendly fare, exploring genres that otherwise may have been left to Syfy. HBO is producing a 60-minute pilot for Game of Thrones, based on the A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels of George R.R. Martin. The expensive pilot garnered buzz at Comic-Con and online, with many industry observers expecting a series pickup shortly after the pilot gets delivered early this year."

  18. That's a nice and for all we know accurate summary! The post need a Status Report tag :) Just to keep things tidy.
Another bit: The FAQ question still reads: 'When and where is the pilot scheduled to be filmed?' We're past that, the question should be changed slightly.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Also in the FAQ we have:
"What if I just want to work as a PA or intern or guy-who-runs-out-to-get-the-coffee?"
    - surely you mean "guy-who-runs-out-to-get-the-nice-hot-cuppa-tea". This is a mainly British cast after all. I can just imagine our Ned saying "Put the kettle on Catelyn" "don’t forget the digestives".

    http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/irish-actor-excites-abc-drama,1093103.shtml

Are you making a new years wish? "Well, I did read for HBO Game of Thrones but the role went to Nikolaj Coster Waldau. That hurt like hell because I love the David Benioff script. He's a genius writer. His 'City of Thieves' is my favourite novel of the last ten years. If I have any new years career wish its to join the world of fire and ice he's creating with HBO. Fingers crossed. Failing that I'll happily play a Vampire in the next Twilight saga. I'll bring my own teeth."

  22. Harry Lloyd again (This is London):

"Harry has just filmed a pilot for HBO, Game of Thrones, which should make him as much of a household name as Gemma if it's picked up in March. It's an epic fantasy in which seven aristocratic families fight to control a kingdom. Harry plays the 'beggar king', Viserys Targaryen, battling against Sean Bean. As a result, he is turning his thoughts towards Hollywood, albeit with some reluctance. 'American agents have started calling, and it now seems to be a time to start looking that way,' he says. 'But to be honest, the play makes you think you don't want any of it. Right now I'm happy with my level of success. I don't get hassled in the street and I've had some brilliant parts. Now it's getting to the point where the world's opening up a bit, but I'm very aware that it's important not to do anything that you can't undo. I just don't think any job is worth sacrificing your private life for.'"

  23. Greetings everyone. I am new to this site, so I wanted to say "hello".

My grandchild (yes, I am an ancient creature) recently introduced me to the intriguing fairy-land tale crafted by George R R Martin, and I have since been "devouring" the pages. I must say the Others are a quite remarkable and original idea. I hope soon to see the pages of Game of Thrones come to life on the big screen.

The young ones keep speaking of a film named Avator in "3-D". Oh, how excited they were seeing that movie in 3-D. It is about aliens and outerspace and it is in 3-D using special glasses, like they way they used to do. Now apparently they use a new technology to make movies in 3-D. So I came to make the connection of Game of Thrones and 3-D. I think it would be absolutely brilliant, don't you? My mind keeps going back to imagine The Others in 3-D--how fantastic!

Are there any rumors about Game of Thrones going to be 3-D? Due to chronic dysentary, I have been praying that Cinemax will purchase the Game of Thrones pilot and put it in on the big screen before I move on. But in 3-D would be ... well, it would simply be larger than life! I have written letters to them but it is like sending into a black hole. Any information regarding this would be much appreciated.

    Hopefully,
    Silvio

  24. @Silvio,

At best youre an old man dying of something awful who doen't know Avatar from HBO. At worst, you don't seem to realize that no one gets your joke, it's a secret to all except u, so if ur laughing, it's sad. U should do like Mikey Jackson and look at the man in the mirror coz your lack of humors is not worth a pool of bloody vomit. And u should pray coz you gotta pray just to make it today. Dis here'm site is made up of a community of people, an ur the outcast shooting your mouth off for nothing. ur that psycho guy in the bus who talks to himself loudly and who doesn't know where he is that everyone tries to ignore. it's real sad, man.

  26. @Davey

This post is about how Benioff and Weiss and involved in every single process of the pilot because they are producers. But it's kind of going all over the place. The price of waiting patiently for March ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. oh yeah!!!

Do we know exactly what day in March? I want to get in line early to get tickets.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I doubt it for the following reasons:
    1. I don't think HBO have a 3D channel, so they'd only be able to air it in 2D.
    2. It's more expensive to go 3D (and requires more time in post-production).
    3. A lot of GoT is dialogue, which doesn't really benefit from 3D.
    4. They didn't shoot the pilot in 3D so they'd have to re-shoot it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Davey

By end of March, HBO is going to decide whether they want to produce an entire first season of GoT.

U might want to take a look at the FAQ:

  30. Looks like Sansa has a Youtube account: http://www.youtube.com/user/Sophiesansa

  31. Wow. Sophie Turner, in all her glory.

It's actually refreshing to see a normal teen instead of the typical acts-too-old-for-her-age affected actress. She's like a teen mad scientist. Frenetic. The Girl of a Thousand Weird Faces.

Sort of reminds me of my daughter. Except so very British. "I'm thirteen years old. Not going to untie my dress. Sorry."

And the fact that she came to the defense of Tamzin is nice (though I'm not sure it's necessary any more); there seems to be a GoT brotherhood (sisterhood?) developing.

Shout-outs to Maisie and Isaac as well.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah, Sophie was very confident and quite forthright in RL (possibly not quite as much as Maisie Williams though). She, Maisie and their mums were among those who Took a Dim View of the Tamzin Merchant comments.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm glad the older men (Alfie, Ron) seemed to take a protective, guiding hand in these kids as well (as per many of the comments I heard about the Belfast signing and moot).

When (WHEN) the show goes to series, it'll help that they already consider themselves an extended family.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i have written to HBO Canada. They answered that as far as they knew they didn't have rights for this GoT. However, we are going to keep insisting to show our interest!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sophie is quite obviously loving this whole thing, isn't she? :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh to be young again. I love her passion and youthful enthusiasm. Must be so cool to go from school plays to an HBO production. All of a sudden, all these people are interested in you and your work. She has a fan site already! I'm glad she is comfortable enough to relish the attention and not shy away from it. She definitely has the potential to be a star if this show gets picked up and goes the distance.

Also, we now know how they will be pronouncing Targaryen for the series. TAR-GEHR-EE-EN

    ReplyDelete
  37. Good catch Wic!

Thank you Sophie, if you read this, I know finaly how to say loudly Daenerys Targaryen!

  38. Yes, and Sansa is a very British "SAHN-za" rather than the American "SAN-za."

... What do you mean that was never in question!?

    ReplyDelete
  39. GinaC, perhaps that is because there isn't yet a show for HBO Canada to try to get? I think you can relax about it. There is no way if HBO gives the show the greenlight that HBO Canada would not be showing it.

  40. Btw there is a tournament with fantasy character on the french site elbakin.net (very serious and famous site for fantasy in french). You can vote for Cersei (she is currently facing Dracula and is in trouble ;) )

Be nice to those kids on Twitter, all of you with Twitter account! :)
    They are so sweet!

  42. Sophie's done another video (cuz I asked her to...)

If you don't hang out at Westeros, you might not get "I blame Pod", mind you.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sophie's really cute and charming. I can't wait to see her as Sansa.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sophie is totally going to make more people like Sansa! :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree with jirka and strangerface. I cant wait to see Sansa's scenes. Watching Sophie's manerisms really give my mental Sansa life. I can just see her, with all her playful enthusiasm, screaming joyfully into her pillow after Joff breaks their betrothal ! I can also see her rolling her eyes and reprimanding Arya.

I know there arent too many "Sansa" fans, and though she's not my favorite character, I love the character for the contrast she brings to the book. She is dutiful, proper, spoiled, eager to please, and scripted, beliving that life is just as the songs describe. An innocent breath of fresh air in an otherwise dark and brutal world. And an(ahem)stark contrast to her sister Arya, who I am even more eager to see played out on the small screen. ^^

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow, just voted for Cersei on Elbakin, she's tied 50/50 against Dracula! Tight race...

Also, Sophie looks amazing for Sansa! Love the Pod video!!
